India's poor
October 20, 2007

It's also clear that not everyone enjoys a high-paying job in India.

on all main roads, real horses and cows compete with artificial horsepower

in hope that not everyone has gone digital

trying to make a living out of selling coconuts for 10 Rupees each

He'll show you his magic for 100 Rs

mass transit is not quite there yet

I wonder how long ago the bus burned?

if caught by police, bribe your way out of a ticket

Stray dogs, stray dogs, and even more stray dogs. Everywhere.

and chicken

in search for food where I would not dream to look

And, finally — what they say about cows on the roads....it's true.

If only all were in the contryside...

....but, no.

I guess we're down to two lanes today.

This is Hosur Rd, the main artery connecting Bangalore with Electronic City, where most hightech industries are located. (Infosys looming in the background here)
The road also carries most cross-country cargo trucks, so traffic is heavy.

cows, cows

grazing near the freeway off-ramp
[where someone is airing their laundry]

Traffic is not clogged only by cows, there's also twowheelers...

some go slow due to heavy load

There's of course the tractors, and the mini-trucks.

...little carts...

The little auto-rikshaws since long replaced the original rikshaws, and along with old buses, trucks, , bicycles and people...
...you have an inferno, where virtually no traffic rules apply.

[a view out the windshield]

No one cares about traffic lights after 10.30 at night...or maybe they just don't see them?

With gas prices almost as high as Sweden's, it's amazing traffic is this heavy.
India: 50 Rs/l = 8.30:-/l = $4.90/gal
Sweden: 12:-/l = 72 Rs/l = $7/gal
US: $3/gal = 5.10:-/l = 30 Rs/l

spelling? :-)

This seems to be how water is distributed in many neighborhoods.

storm drains make perfect slides

Trucks all encourage you to "sound horn" as you pass...imagine the noise around these highways.

riding rikshaws is a cheap (but not the fastest) way to
get around

The shiny buildings in the background are the newly built high-tech industries

another surburban street

Sheep, tied up to a pole...no food in sight.

[never mind it's 30°C out here]

With wooden scaffolding this crooked, I wonder where construction workers find insurance?
