Near Escalante lies an old petrified forest.
Trees have sucked up minerals from the ground water, which eventually replaced the wood cells.
After the wood has turned to rock, it get's pretty heavy. Heavy as a rock. It is a rock.

As the petrified trees fell, they broke up in pieces...just like rock columns would have done.
You see the age rings and everything....but the wood has turned into rock.
