Hiking Grand Canyon
June 9, 2006

All packed up, ready to hike. Christine, on a bus a few miles from the Kaibab trailhead.

Ready to go at 4.30 in the afternoon - to avoid the worst heat...

Breathtaking views from the very beginning...

Going down, down, down...

The temperature hits 110°F (43°C) and a sign says "No Drinking Water Available".......

late lunch with a view

Many switchbacks....this is the steeper way down.

shades

gives a perspective

the sun is setting soon

Howdy.

At the bottom, we come to a tunnel...

...that leads to a bridge...

Hot and sweaty, we're almost at our goal.

Reaching the riverside camp site around 8pm, it's dark out, and over 90°F (32°C)...pheow.

we rinse off in the cool river

...then had to chase off...something....that was going for our food.

The moon rises, providing some light.

We're cooking...

...dining...

...and waking up the next morning!

The sun is way up when we finally get our butts out of bed. A bit sore, admittedly.

Christine walks into a deer

...and so, the heat returns.

After cleaning up our camp site, it seems we missed a nut or two...

An attempt to cool off before departure...

...and many more along the way.

[soaking]

heading up a different way, the Bright Angel trail.

It's much longer, but at least there're some creeks along the way....so I can soak my hat.

Hi, fella.

You can also ride mules the whole way

The sun is almost straight up...not much of a shadow there.

Tada! Keep that spirit up!

Resting, stretching at Indian Garden.

5 miles down, 4.5 to go...

Geez...not another hike in the 100's!

pretty darn dirty little feet

Eventually, we're quite tired...

...and done!

A good size steak was the absolute right thing tonight.

...along with a cold beer. Or two.

What we did...
