burning the old vinyls
March 10, 2006

The setup proved extremely simple - just hook the turntable straight to the Microphone jack.

While playing an LP, I record the sound on my computer using a (free) program called Audacity. This program then lets me cut it up in the appropriate tracks, and save these as mp3 files. Windows Media Player (or iTunes) can then burn a music CD from these mp3 files.

Since the turntable is hooked straight to the laptop, I need to apply a so-called RIAA equalization. Audacity actually offers this functionality as well..!

Lastly, to improve the "old" LP sound quality, I use Audacity to perform a Noise Reduction.

All in all, quite amazing for free software!

The end result - the old vinyls burned onto CDs.
